Medusae have been floating weightlessly through the oceans for 540 million years. They consist of 99 percent water and therefore cannot be fossilised – except in very rare cases such as the one you see here. Fossils of jellyfish are a real rarity in the history of the Earth. The fossilised medusae impressively demonstrate the quality of fossil preservation in the Solnhofen Platy Limestones.
