The Willibald Castle has of course not always been used as a museum. The cornerstone was laid around 1355 and the castle has been modified in several phases. It was the residence of the Eichstätt Prince-Bishops until 1725. First approaches of natural history research began as early as in the 17th century, and collections were stored at the Willibald Castle. However, there was still a long way to go before the Jura-Museum was opened in 1976.
