150 million years before our time

A different world

Dear visitors, immerse yourself in the Jurassic period. Find out what the region around Eichstätt looked like 150 million years ago – it was very different from today! First of all, we would like to give you an idea of what the Earth looked like back then. Can you spot the differences between the two globes in front of you?

A lot going on since the Jurassic period

A comparison of the two globes shows that the continents on our planet are moving. It is only a few centimeters a year, but there has been movement over millions of years. Our region was also affected by this movement. By moving the timeline, you can see how our region once lay on the edge of a huge ocean between islands and how it was pushed into its current position.

Ma: million years

Move from one geological era to the next to get an idea of how Eichstätt moved with the continents – here marked as a red dot.

Earth changes and continues to do so. But not only its appearance changes, the climate is also subject to fluctuations, and entire organisms and ecosystems respond to this with evolution and further development.

A lot has happened on Earth since the Jurassic period.

Put the following events in the right order.

Time travel into the Jurassic world

The further back we go in the history of our Earth, the stranger and different the world seems to us. But how do we know what it looked like back then? The Platy Limestones and their fossils are a window into the time of 150 million years ago. Several institutions rewarded them with honoring titles for their importance for helping us understand our Earth and its life.

This guided tour gives you an idea of what the world was like back then.
